Julian’s musical education began as a chorister in Lichfield Cathedral. He later studied at the Royal College of Music and became Principal Horn of the Hallé Orchestra under Sir John Barbirolli at the age of twenty. In 1977, after a further seven years in the BBC Symphony Orchestra he was appointed Co-Principal in the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, where he remained until 1996. He was a professor at the Royal College of Music from 1974 to 2011 and has taught students from all over the world.
